Explore Georgia by car
Batumi is Georgia's city on the Black Sea, and behind it Adjara climbs from the subtropical coast into green mountains. With a car, the beaches, the old fortress, the waterfalls and the highland lakes are all an easy day out.
Any car suits the city and the coast. These are available in Batumi, a quarter of an hour from the airport.
Batumi is Georgia's Black Sea city, with a long seafront boulevard, a beach the length of town and a skyline that lights up at night. It is the capital of Adjara, a small region where the subtropical coast gives way to forested mountains within a short drive.
The city is easy on foot, but much of Adjara lies outside it: the Botanical Garden on the cliffs north of town, Gonio Fortress to the south, and inland the Adjaristskali valley with its waterfalls, arched stone bridges and mountain lakes. Buses reach few of them. A car makes each one a half-day trip, and the same road carries on to Goderdzi, the region's ski resort.
The sights most visitors come for, from the seafront to the mountain gorges. Most are a short drive from Batumi; the mountain ones make a full day out.
The seafront promenade runs the length of the city, with parks, cafés, cycle paths and the beach alongside. It is busiest on summer evenings.
A tall steel tower wrapped in a double helix of the letters of the Georgian alphabet, with a viewing deck near the top. It lights up after dark.
A moving steel sculpture on the seafront: two figures glide towards each other, pass through one another and part again. Best seen at dusk.
The heart of the old town: Europe Square with its statue of Medea, and nearby the Piazza, a small Italian-style square of cafés, mosaics and a clock tower.
A cable car from the city up to Anuria hill, for the widest view over Batumi, the port and the coast.
A vast subtropical garden on the Green Cape, north of the city, with plants from around the world on terraces high above the sea.
The walls of the Roman fort of Apsaros, south of Batumi towards the Turkish border. Tradition holds that the Apostle Matthias is buried here.
The last beaches before the Turkish border, with clearer water than the city beach and good snorkelling off the rocks.
The ruins of a Byzantine fortress on a wooded headland at Tsikhisdziri, on the coast road to Kobuleti, with views along the shore.
A tall waterfall and, a short walk away, a medieval arched stone bridge over the Adjaristskali. The classic first stop on the road inland.
Rain-soaked forest in the hills behind the coast; its name means "the weeping one". Marked trails lead through the forest to waterfalls.
A cable car that swings high across the deep Adjaristskali gorge from the town of Khulo to the village of Tago, with long views down the valley.
Batumi Airport is on the southern edge of the city, so the seafront is minutes away. North, the coast road runs to Kobuleti; inland, the road follows the Adjaristskali river up into the mountains towards Khulo and the Goderdzi Pass.

Drive times assume normal conditions and no stops. Mountain routes take longer in winter, and some of them close for part of the year — check the road before you set off.

About 6 km, which takes around 15 minutes by car.
Yes. From Kutaisi Airport it is about 121 km, around 1 h 45 min. From Tbilisi Airport it is about 380 km, around 5 h 45 min, most of it on the main road across the country.
Not for Batumi and the coast, where any car will do. For the mountain road inland towards the Goderdzi Pass an SUV is more comfortable, and in winter choose all-wheel or four-wheel drive on winter tyres.
The beach season runs from about June to September, when the sea is warm. Spring and autumn are quieter and good for the waterfalls and mountains inland. Batumi is one of the rainiest places in Georgia, so pack for showers at any time of year.
Yes. You can pick up the car at Batumi Airport, or anywhere in Batumi or any other city in Georgia, at any location you choose.

Batumi Airport is a quarter of an hour from the seafront. Choose the car, then the coast and the mountains.
