Driving in Georgia
None of this is specific to the airport — it's what changes the moment you leave the car park, wherever in Georgia you're headed.
- Which side
- Traffic keeps to the right, as in most of Europe. If you're used to driving on the left, take the first roundabout slowly.
- Speed limits
- 60 km/h in towns and cities, 90 km/h on the open road, 110 km/h on motorways, for the kind of car you'll be renting. Speed cameras are common and accurate.
- Phones
- Holding a phone while driving is against the law. Hands-free is fine — worth setting up before you leave the car park.
- Winter tyres
- Required on designated mountain sections between 1 December and 1 March — the same routes marked as mountain roads above. The cars in the four-wheel-drive strip are already fitted for it.
- Seatbelts
- Compulsory for the driver and front passenger, and checked at the police posts on the main roads.
- Drink-driving
- Enforcement is strict and checkpoints are frequent. If you're driving that day, the safest limit is none.

- The terminal
- One main terminal on several levels. International arrivals come out on the ground floor.
- Where we meet you
- Immediately outside the glass exit doors of the arrivals hall, by the greeting zone and the transport pillars.
- Parking
- The P1 car park directly in front of the terminal. The first 15 minutes are free, then roughly 5 to 10 GEL an hour.
- Leaving the car
- The upper-level departures curb or the P1 car park. You hand the keys over in person.
- Night arrivals
- The airport runs around the clock and so does the handover. You can collect or return at any hour, and a few owners price late-night service separately.
Worth comparing
A car, or a taxi each time?
Getting into Tbilisi is easy and cheap by any method. The question is what happens on day three, when the plan involves a village with no Bolt drivers in it.

Where exactly do I collect the car at Tbilisi Airport?
In the arrivals area. The owner of the car meets your flight and hands the keys over in person, so there is no rental desk to find and no transfer to an off-site car park. The precise meeting point is confirmed with you once you have booked.
I land in the middle of the night. Is that a problem?
No. Handovers here are arranged around your flight rather than around office hours, so a night arrival is booked the same way as any other. Give us the flight number and the owner will be there for it.
Can I drop the car back at the airport on my last day?
Yes. You bring it back to the airport and hand the keys over there, which saves crossing the city on the morning of your flight.
Do I need a four-wheel drive for Kazbegi or Gudauri?
The road north climbs a long way and conditions change with the season, so all-wheel or four-wheel drive on winter tyres is the sensible choice outside summer. The strip further up this page shows only cars that have both.
Is it hard to drive in Tbilisi itself?
City traffic is busy and parking in the older districts is tight, which is one reason people collect at the airport and head straight out. If you are staying in the centre for the first night or two, it is worth checking whether your accommodation has parking before you pick your dates.
What currency are the prices in?
Lari. That is the currency you are charged in and what the price on every listing means. The display can be switched to dollars or euros for comparison, but the charge stays in lari.
Is a deposit required?
It is set per car by the owner, not by us. Each listing says whether a deposit is needed and how much it is before you book, and some cars ask for none.
Can I cancel if my plans change?
Many cars here can be cancelled free of charge and carry a badge saying so. The terms that apply to the car you are looking at are on its page, before you pay.
