Driving in Georgia
None of this is specific to the airport — it's what changes the moment you leave the car park, wherever in Georgia you're headed.
- Which side
- Traffic keeps to the right, as in most of Europe. If you're used to driving on the left, take the first roundabout slowly.
- Speed limits
- 60 km/h in towns and cities, 90 km/h on the open road, 110 km/h on motorways, for the kind of car you'll be renting. Speed cameras are common and accurate.
- Phones
- Holding a phone while driving is against the law. Hands-free is fine — worth setting up before you leave the car park.
- Winter tyres
- Required on designated mountain sections between 1 December and 1 March — the same routes marked as mountain roads above. The cars in the four-wheel-drive strip are already fitted for it.
- Seatbelts
- Compulsory for the driver and front passenger, and checked at the police posts on the main roads.
- Drink-driving
- Enforcement is strict and checkpoints are frequent. If you're driving that day, the safest limit is none.

- One small single-storey terminal with a single arrivals area.

- Just outside the main terminal exit doors, at the kerbside meeting zone.
- Parking
- The car park next to the terminal entrance. The first 10 to 15 minutes are free, then the standard hourly rate.
- Leaving the car
- The drop-off zone in front of the terminal, or the car park. You hand the keys back to the owner there.
- Night arrivals
- Handover follows the flight schedule around the clock. Night and early-morning collections work normally, and some owners add a small charge for them.

Batumi itself is walkable and well served. The case for a car is everything outside it — the beaches north, the pass east, and the fact that none of it runs to a timetable.

Where do I collect the car at Batumi Airport?
In the arrivals area, from the owner of the car itself. There is no rental counter to queue at and no shuttle to an off-airport lot. The exact meeting point is confirmed with you once the booking is made.
What if my flight is late?
Add your flight number when you book and the owner tracks it. The handover moves to your actual arrival time — a delay does not cost you the car.
Can I return the car to the airport when I fly out?
Yes. The car comes back to the airport on your departure day and the keys are handed over there, rather than at an office in the city.
Should I rent a convertible in Batumi?
It is the one part of Georgia where it genuinely makes sense — the coast road is flat, open and right beside the sea. Look for the Convertible category, and bear in mind that open cars are the first thing to go over the summer.
Do I need four-wheel drive on this coast?
Not for Batumi, Kobuleti or the run to Kutaisi. If you are going east over Goderdzi, or north into Svaneti, then all-wheel or four-wheel drive on winter tyres is the right call, and the strip above shows only cars that have both.
What currency are the prices in?
Lari. That is what you are charged in and what every listed price means. You can display dollars or euros to compare, but the charge itself is in lari.
Is a deposit required?
That is set by each car's owner rather than by us. The listing states whether a deposit is needed, and how much, before you book — and some cars ask for none at all.
How far in advance should I book for the summer?
As early as you can. Batumi is a summer destination and the coast fills up, so the choice in July and August is considerably narrower than it looks in March. Booking ahead also means the price is fixed in lari before the season pushes it.
