Why go

Why drive to Gudauri

Gudauri sits on the Georgian Military Highway, the old road north from Tbilisi into the Greater Caucasus. In winter it is the country's busiest ski resort; in summer the same slopes turn green and fill with hikers and paragliders.

A car means you are not tied to transfer times. Stay in Gudauri and drive down for supplies, or stay lower and drive up for the day. On the way, the road passes the Ananuri fortress and the Zhinvali reservoir, both worth a stop.

  • Freeride and heli-skiing for experienced riders
  • Après-ski in the resort village

Summer

Winter driving

Driving to Gudauri in winter

The road to Gudauri is kept open through the ski season, but snowfall can slow it down or close it for a few hours. A car with grip makes the climb calmer.

  1. 01

Choose all-wheel or four-wheel drive, on winter tyres.

  2. 02

Check the road status before you set off; conditions change quickly in the mountains.

  3. 03

Allow more time than the summer drive, especially on the hairpins below the resort.

  4. 04

Fill the tank before the climb; fuel stations thin out as the road goes up.
