Renting a car in Batumi

Batumi is a seaside city on the Black Sea, squeezed between the coast and the mountains of Adjara. The boulevard, the old town and the beaches are best on foot; the rest of the region lies beyond the city: the coast road north to Kobuleti, Batumi Botanical Garden, Gonio Fortress to the south and the mountain roads inland.

Summer is the busy season and the coast fills up, so book early for July and August. Open-top cars suit the flat coast road; for the road over Goderdzi or into Svaneti, choose all-wheel drive with winter tyres.

Every car on Trentro comes from its owner, who hands over the keys in person: at your hotel, at your door, at the airport or wherever else you agree. Prices are in lari.

Questions

Renting a car in Batumi: your questions

Where can I pick up a rental car in Batumi?

Wherever suits you in the city: your hotel, your door, the airport or another spot you agree with the owner. The owner hands the keys over in person. Say where you would like to meet in the comments when you book, and it is confirmed with you afterwards.

Should I rent a convertible in Batumi?

It is the one part of Georgia where it genuinely makes sense: the coast road is flat, open and right beside the sea. Look for the Convertible category, and bear in mind that open cars are the first thing to go over the summer.

Do I need four-wheel drive on this coast?

Not for Batumi, Kobuleti or the run to Kutaisi. If you are going east over Goderdzi, or north into Svaneti, then all-wheel or four-wheel drive on winter tyres is the right call.

How far in advance should I book for the summer?

As early as you can. Batumi is a summer destination and the coast fills up, so the choice in July and August is considerably narrower than it looks in March.

What currency are the prices in, and is there a deposit?

Prices are in lari, which is also what you are charged in; the display can be switched to dollars or euros for comparison. Each owner sets their own deposit, and the listing says whether one is needed and how much before you book. Many cars can be cancelled free of charge and carry a badge saying so.
