Renting a car in Tbilisi

Tbilisi lies in a river valley, with the steep, narrow streets of the old town on one side and the wide avenues of Vake and Saburtalo on the other. Inside the centre a car is as much a burden as a help, and parking in the older districts is tight. Most people collect a car for the days they leave the city.

From Tbilisi the roads run in every direction: north up the Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi and the ski resort of Gudauri, east to the vineyards of Kakheti, and west on the motorway towards Borjomi, Kutaisi and the coast. The mountain roads reward all-wheel drive and, in winter, proper tyres.

Every car on Trentro comes from its owner, who hands over the keys in person: at your hotel, at your door, at the airport or wherever else you agree. Prices are in lari.

Questions

Renting a car in Tbilisi: your questions

Where can I pick up a rental car in Tbilisi?

Wherever suits you in the city: your hotel, your door, the airport or another spot you agree with the owner. The owner hands the keys over in person. Say where you would like to meet in the comments when you book, and it is confirmed with you afterwards.

Is it hard to drive in Tbilisi itself?

City traffic is busy and parking in the older districts is tight, so it is worth checking whether your accommodation has parking before you pick your dates. Outside the centre the roads open up quickly.

Do I need a four-wheel drive for Kazbegi or Gudauri?

The road north climbs a long way and conditions change with the season, so all-wheel or four-wheel drive on winter tyres is the sensible choice outside summer. Each listing shows whether a car has them.

What currency are the prices in?

Lari. That is the currency you are charged in and what the price on every listing means. The display can be switched to dollars or euros for comparison, but the charge stays in lari.

Is a deposit required, and can I cancel?

Each owner sets their own deposit, and the listing says whether one is needed and how much before you book. Many cars can be cancelled free of charge and carry a badge saying so; the terms for a particular car are on its page before you pay.
